PSX Doom music format Q's
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:22:39 PM »

Hey Kaiser,

Originally I made a digital-to-digital recording of all the Doom music tracks using the PS2's digital optical output, but I got curious about possibly having a midi set much like we've been doing for Doom 64. I found a thread from last year on Doom world where you were talking with 'nat' and his efforts to crack the sound system. What was the final outcome of that?

I can use psound to extract the notes bit-for-bit, and we can even easily make a sound font file from them. The main thing is extracting the midi event instructions.

It's very possible. The MIDI format is very much the same except of course the actual PCM data is different (uses DPCM data that's stored in the .LCD files). However because I am kinda overwhelmed with work and of course, Doom64EX, I won't be able to find the time to work on a conversion tool right at this time. But I do want to work on one sometime in the future.

Cool. As I said, we don't even need the LCD files; just the midi data converted is all. From there, I can make a soundfont file in exactly the same way the one EX uses for Doom 64.

I am sure it's going to be a pain to make one manually. I'd rather have the tool dump out a soundfont. There's always a bunch of little things that are easily overlooked such as presets, instrument settings, fade in, decay, etc.

I've made a tool to extract the WAV data from the .LCD files though it will be a while before I convert the .WMD file to a sound font file. The instrument data is a bit different from the N64 version. MIDI data is exactly the same though.

Currently working on a tool (during whatever free time I have available) to spit out a soundfont/midi files from DOOMSND.WMD and .LCD files. Format is pretty simple and not really different from the N64 versions. Values for attack/decay time are different (256 is equivalent to 1.0 so I will need to figure this out with the other values).

I'll provide more info once I can.

No rush here, just wondering if there has been any progress on this project.

Hey, sorry for the delay.

I stopped due to lack of interest, but I haven't abandoned it yet. Just been busy with other things.

I don't have much really. I haven't released any tools yet but I do have some docs/notes. Not TOO different from Doom64's sound library though.
